What do Chiropractors do?

Chiropractors are part of your primary care team. Chiropractors are Doctors who treat conditions of the joints, muscles, nerves, and fascia as they relate to the body. At Peridot Wellness, we take a functional approach to chiropractic care to get to the root cause of your problem.

What is involved in your first chiropractic visit?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive health history, where we assess factors that could be contributing to your current complaint/symptoms. This is followed by a functional movement assessment and advanced testing to get to the root cause of your pain. Based on our clinical impression and diagnosis, we will present the best treatment options, and work with you to determine the best course of action for you. Our job is to educate you so that you understand what is going on in your body and empower you to heal yourself.  Your initial assessment always includes treatment to ensure you walk away from each appointment feeling better.

We work with you whether you have an acute injury, want to address chronic pain, prevent re-injury, optimize movement patterns, fix your posture, or live pain-free. We believe just because some diagnoses are the same, they should not ever be treated as such.

We are commonly asked, "Should I see a chiropractor if I am not in pain?", and to this we say YES. Before the onset of pain, typically we see dysfunctional movement patterns. Dysfunctional movement patterns are often the cause of pain and injury. These are things we may not realize we are doing over and over again (with our gait or training regime).

Chiropractic services

Manual Care

We use different manual care techniques to address issues with the fascia, muscles, joints, ligaments, nerves and circulatory system (including the lymphatics).

Manual care techniques include; fascial release, active release techniques (ART), instrument assisted techniques, chiropractic adjustments, lymphatic drainage and joint mobilizations. The goal is to improve range of motion, boost circulation and promote healing.

Acupuncture

Most of our chiropractic treatments include acupuncture. Treatments aim to improving the conduction of nerve impulses, boost circulation, release tension, and promote healing at the cellular level.

Acupuncture is a fantastic technique to help address physical injuries, reduce pain, balance and calm the nervous system, and promote deep healing simultaneously.

Rehabilitation

Active care is vital in order to heal and prevent re-injury. This includes joint stabilization by activation and strengthening the muscles, improving mobility by moving joints through their full range of motion, and stretching for tissue extensibility. It also involves training muscle fibers that have weakened or damaged and relax overactive  muscles that are compensating for areas not functioning optimally.

Prenatal & Postnatal care

Chiropractic care is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy. Women often will start chiropractic care in the first trimester of their pregnancy (but you can see a chiropractor at any point!).

Chiropractic care can help with symptoms like back pain, muscle and joint pain, but can also prepare your body to better handle the postural changes that often accompany any pregnant patient and preparing for birth.

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are created from a cast of your feet to help correct biomechanical imbalances. The idea is similar to glasses where they help to correct imbalances to reduce strain on the body and support re-alignment. They are as comfortable as insoles, but with the advantage of being created based on the imprint of your feet.

Custom orthotics are frequently included in your extended healthcare plan. Check your plan to see if you are covered.

X-ray imaging

Your intake, health history, and physical examination provide most of the information we need to effectively come to a working diagnosis, without additional testing. There are however certain cases in which we cannot rule in or out pathology without information provided with imaging (x-ray, ultrasound and MRI). Therefore, if indicated (particularly with acute trauma) your chiropractor is able to and may request x-ray imaging.

Taping

Kinesiotaping can be a great way to assist in the early stages of injury management. Kinesiotape is stretchy 4-way tape that is breathable, waterproof and moves with you.

It can provide stability, without compromising too much mobility. It can also be used to help with inflammation and lymphatic flow. It is great in the early stages of sprains, strains, and contussions.
